Low birth weight is linked to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, but prior research lacked timing insight. A study tracked Danish adults (30-60 years) from 1999-2001, analyzing birth records (1939-1971), diabetes onset, and covariates. Among 4590 participants over 19 years, age-related type 2 diabetes rates rose, more in males, and fell with higher birthweight (0.60 incidence rate ratio per 1 kg increase). This birthweight-diabetes link remained significant across models, indicating independent association regardless of adult BMI or genetic risk. Lower birth weight heightens type 2 diabetes risk, underlining its impact irrespective of other factors.
