Low Birthweight Raises CKD Risk in Type 2 Diabetes

A study of 5982 individuals with recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes examined the association between low birthweight (LBW) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) risk. Over a median follow-up of 8.3 years, LBW was linked to a higher 10-year standardized CKD risk (36.0% vs. 30.6%; aHR 1.23, 95% CI 0.98–1.55). Each 1 kg decrease in birthweight correlated with a 6.6% increase in urine albumin/creatinine ratio.
