A recent study conducted in Germany and Austria assessed the implementation of the 2019 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) guideline recommendations for lipid-lowering therapies among over 30,000 patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) from 2020 to 2022. Among T1D patients, only 19.3% used statins, 2.2% used ezetimibe, and less than 1% used proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors or fibrates. In T2D patients, 45.7% received statins, 3.4% received ezetimibe, while fibrates and PCSK9 inhibitors were used by 1% and 0.1%, respectively. Goal attainment for LDL-C was rarely met. This study sheds light on the need for improved lipid-lowering therapy management for diabetic patients to reduce cardiovascular risk effectively.
