Low-Dose Supplementation with Retinol Improves Retinal Function in Eyes with Age-Related Macular Degeneration but Without Reticular Pseudodrusen

A recent study investigates the effects of oral vitamin A supplementation on patients with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with and without reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) affecting their dark adaptation. Five AMD patients and seven with RPD received 16,000 IU of vitamin A for 8 weeks. The study found significant improvements in AMD patients' dark adaptation and cone sensitivity after 4 and 8 weeks of supplementation. However, no significant changes were observed in RPD patients. This suggests that lower-dose vitamin A supplementation can partially mitigate AMD-related functional changes, but structural issues may hinder its impact on RPD patients.
