Low HDV Prevalence in Senegal, but High Liver Fibrosis Risk

HDV co-infection raises liver fibrosis risk! Among 914 HBV-positive individuals in Senegal, only 1.4% had HDV, with 61.5% showing detectable RNA. HDV genotype 5 was most common. HDVAb positivity (aOR 11.7), male sex (aOR 5.4), ALT >40 IU/L (aOR 4.4), and HBeAg positivity (aOR 4.6) were linked to fibrosis. Despite low prevalence, HDV significantly increases cirrhosis risk, highlighting the need for better screening and management.
