Low PSMA Expression in Breast Cancer Limits Theranostic Potential

The study aimed to analyze prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) expression in breast cancer (BC) using immunohistochemistry, assessing its potential for targeted therapies and imaging modalities. A total of 58 patients who underwent breast cancer surgery between January 2012 and December 2017 were randomly selected from a retrospective database. PSMA and CD31 immunodetection was performed on serial slides, with digital images analyzed for positive neovessel percentages. Results showed that 31.6% of patients exhibited no PSMA expression, while 50.9% scored “1” and 17.5% scored “2” for neovascular expression. Notably, the median proportion of positive neovessels in the latter group was 5% (range: 3–19). A multivariable logistic regression indicated that non-luminal tumors had 4.55 times higher odds of PSMA positivity, whereas lobular subtypes demonstrated a significant decrease.
