Low‐intensity pulsed ultrasound ameliorates erectile dysfunction induced by bilateral cavernous nerve injury through enhancing schwann cell‐mediated cavernous nerve regeneration

The study investigated the effect of Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) therapy on neurogenic erectile dysfunction caused by cavernous nerve injury. Thirty rats were divided into three groups: sham-operated, bilateral cavernous nerve injury (BCNI), and BCNI + LIPUS. Results showed that LIPUS therapy improved the erectile function of rats in the BCNI +LIPUS group compared to the BCNI group. LIPUS also promoted the proliferation and migration of Schwann cells and increased nerve growth factor expression. RNA sequencing analysis suggested that the PI3K/Akt pathway and the TrkB/Akt/CREB signaling axis were involved in the LIPUS-mediated activation of Schwann cells. The results indicate that LIPUS therapy has the potential to be a novel treatment for neurogenic ED caused by cavernous nerve injury.
