Molecular or genetic tests are set to replace sputum microscopy in tuberculosis (TB) detection, following the World Health Organization's recommendation for early and accurate diagnosis. While Goa in India has fully embraced molecular testing, Maharashtra is gradually transitioning due to a shortage of cartridges. The BMC has 42 GeneXpert and seven Truenat machines, with plans to acquire 200 more Truenat devices. Truenat, a cost-effective Indian innovation, presents a portable alternative to GeneXpert, though the latter is more versatile. Maharashtra recently ordered 3.5 lakh Truenat test kits, emphasizing the need for multi-stakeholder intervention in achieving TB elimination.
