Major 2024 Breakthroughs in MASLD Treatment and Guidelines

In 2024, significant progress was achieved in managing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The first medication for treating at-risk metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis was approved, marking a pivotal advancement. Additionally, updated clinical practice guidelines were released, enhancing protocols for screening, diagnosis, and treatment of MASLD. Liver stiffness measurement via vibration-controlled transient elastography was established as a vital surrogate marker for predicting liver-related outcomes. A phase III trial demonstrated that resmetirom, a thyroid hormone receptor β-selective agonist, outperformed placebo in resolving steatohepatitis and improving fibrosis after twelve months. Furthermore, bidirectional changes in liver stiffness were independently linked to the risk of liver-related outcomes in longitudinal MASLD studies.
