Maralixibat in progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (MARCH-PFIC)

A recent study evaluated the efficacy and safety of maralixibat, an ileal bile acid transporter inhibitor, in patients with Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis (PFIC). The study involved 93 participants, randomly assigned to receive maralixibat or a placebo. Results showed significant improvement in pruritus and serum bile acids levels among those treated with maralixibat compared to the placebo group. Common adverse effects included mild to moderate diarrhea. Maralixibat offers a non-surgical pharmacological option for managing PFIC and enhancing the standard of care for affected individuals.
