Maternal Diet and Mindfulness Reduce Child Neurodevelopment Risks

Maternal suboptimal nutrition and high-stress levels have been linked to negative fetal and childhood neurodevelopment. A recent study, the IMPACT BCN trial, tested whether structured interventions—a Mediterranean diet or mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR)—during pregnancy could enhance child neurodevelopment at age 2. Of the 1221 singleton pregnancies included, children in the Mediterranean diet group showed improved cognitive and social-emotional scores, while those in the MBSR group displayed higher social-emotional scores compared to the usual care group. These findings highlight the potential benefits of maternal lifestyle interventions for child neurodevelopment.
