Maternal Glycemic Control in Early Pregnancy Predicts Fetal Growth

A retrospective cohort study investigated the relationship between maternal glycemic control and fetal abdominal circumference (AC) in pregnancies complicated by type 1 diabetes (T1D). Data from 81 women using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) were analyzed. While no cross-sectional relationship was found between third trimester time in range (TIR) and fetal AC at 28-, 32-, or 36-weeks’ gestation, first trimester TIR significantly predicted fetal AC at 32- and 36-weeks (Adjβ = −0.42; P < 0.05, and Adjβ = −0.57; P < 0.05, respectively). Although first trimester HbA1c correlated with AC at 32-weeks, this association was not significant after adjusting for confounders. These findings underscore the critical role of glycemic control in early pregnancy for optimal fetal growth outcomes.
