A study has used cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to investigate the apical anatomy of immature maxillary central incisors. The study found that the apical shadow and apical foramen were more enormous in Nolla 8 incisors than in Nolla 9 incisors. The apical region of the Nolla 8 incisors was also more likely to have a broad, blurred lamina dura. These findings could have implications for diagnosing and treating apical periodontitis.
