During pregnancy, a woman's eating behaviors are influenced by internal signals (interoceptive) and external factors. Physiological changes in the maternal body affect taste perception, food aversions, and cravings. Frequent cravings for highly palatable food can lead to excessive weight gain during pregnancy, potentially impacting the health of the offspring. While the influence of maternal eating habits on offspring health is well-known, the mechanisms behind changes in taste perception and food preferences during pregnancy are still being explored. This review aims to consolidate and discuss research on this topic in both animal models and humans to improve maternal health and reduce metabolic and food-related diseases in future generations.
