Metabolic Syndrome Linked to Increased Risk of Kidney Stones

A study encompassing 15 studies with 433,201 participants examined the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and kidney stone disease (KSD). The analysis revealed a significant association between MetS and KSD, with an unadjusted odds ratio of 2.02 (95% CI 1.96–2.08, P < 0.001) and a pooled adjusted odds ratio of 1.22 (95% CI 1.09–1.37, P < 0.001). Among MetS traits, hypertension and impaired glucose tolerance were most strongly linked to KSD. Despite variations in MetS definitions, the consistent findings suggest a substantial relationship between MetS and KSD, indicating potential clinical implications for screening and management practices in KSD patients.
