Metformin and exercise effects on postprandial insulin sensitivity and glucose kinetics in pre-diabetic and diabetic adults

A recent study examined the combined effects of metformin and exercise on insulin sensitivity in individuals with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Eight adults with T2D, already on metformin treatment, participated in four trials: 1) Metformin only, 2) Placebo instead of metformin, 3) Placebo with high-intensity exercise, and 4) Metformin with exercise. The results showed that metformin reduced postprandial glucose levels during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Combined with exercise, it increased insulin sensitivity compared to placebo, suggesting that exercise enhances metformin's blood glucose-lowering effects. This finding may have implications for individuals using metformin as an antidiabetic medication.
