Microbial metabolites reduce SBP in patients with resistant hypertension

In treatment-naive patients with essential hypertension, supplementation with prebiotic acetylated and butyrylated high-amylose maize starch (HAMSAB) significantly reduces systolic blood pressure (SBP) as compared with placebo. This finding, from a randomized phase II trial, supports the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites (especially acetate and butyrate) in the regulation of blood pressure.
