Microvascular Dysfunction as a Possible Link Between Heart Failure and Cognitive Dysfunction

A study delves into the intricate relationship between microvascular function, heart failure (HF), and cognitive health. Using oxygenation-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging, researchers found that HF patients exhibit reduced cerebral and myocardial oxygenation reserve (MORE) compared to healthy controls. These changes were accompanied by lower cognitive function, as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test indicated. Moreover, cardiac output and end-diastolic volume were significant cerebral and myocardial oxygenation reserve predictors.
