Mood and Emotion Regulation Impact PTSD-Related Distressing Dreams

The study tracked 103 trauma-exposed individuals over 3 weeks using a mobile app. Negative mood before sleep raised the chance of distressing dreams, which led to worsened mood the next day—creating a cycle. Strong emotion regulation reduced dream incidence and improved mood. These findings highlight emotion regulation as a potential target for improving PTSD-related sleep disturbances and mental health.
