More Bumps in the Road to Wiping Out Polio

An independent strategic review has revealed that the global effort to end polio will likely miss two key targets in 2023. The targets included interrupting the transmission of wild polio in Afghanistan and Pakistan and addressing vaccine-derived polio outbreaks elsewhere. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) acknowledged the challenges, citing insecurity in key locations as an issue. While wild polio transmission interruption is expected by early 2024, vaccine-derived polio remains a more complex challenge.
