In males, motile cilia in the efferent ducts create turbulence that prevents ductal obstruction, while in females, they are found in the oviducts and endometrium, aiding in egg capture and sperm binding. Key factors such as miR-34b/c, miR-449, TAp73, Gemc1, and estrogen regulate motile cilia in both the efferent ducts and oviducts, influencing fertility outcomes. Disruptions in ciliary function due to pathogenic mutations can impair fertility by affecting sperm flagella and ciliogenesis.
