Mucosal Autoantibodies in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Study of AMPA

The study explored the presence of anti–modified protein antibodies (AMPA) in mucosal sites of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, focusing on saliva and the intestinal tract. ACPA, anti-CarP, and AAPA IgA were found in seropositive patients' saliva (9%-40% prevalence), but no AMPA was detected in fecal or ileal wash samples. These findings suggest mucosal autoantibody secretion primarily occurs in the oral mucosa, not the gastrointestinal tract.
