Neural cell state shifts and fate loss in ageing and age-related diseases

This study discusses the challenges in treating age-related neurodegenerative diseases due to a limited understanding of their underlying mechanisms. It explains that both environmental and genetic factors contribute to the onset of these diseases, with aging being the primary risk factor. It highlights how somatic cells, including brain cells, undergo temporary state shifts in response to cellular damage and external stimuli to enhance their resilience and repair capabilities. However, excessive state shifts in aging brains can lead to permanent changes in cell identity, resulting in neurodegeneration. The study suggests that gaining a better understanding of cell states and fate shifts could enable controlled manipulation of cell fate to promote brain resilience and repair.
