Neural correlates of decreased impulsivity during delay discounting task after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

This study investigated the effects of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) on choice impulsivity and neural activity in individuals with obesity. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to compare 29 obese participants before and after LSG with a control group of 30 participants with normal weight. The results showed that LSG led to a decrease in impulsivity and changes in brain activation and connectivity. Specifically, areas involved in executive control, reward evaluation, interoception, and prospection showed altered activity after LSG. These findings suggest that nonoperative treatments, such as brain stimulation, may be beneficial for individuals with obesity and overweight based on the neurophysiological effects observed in this study.
