New Heart Transplant Method Could Boost Donor Pool By 30%: Study Results

Doctors at Duke University have developed a new method for heart transplants that is just as effective as the traditional approach. Using hearts donated after circulatory death (DCD), the number of available hearts for transplantation could increase by 30% or more. The survival rates after six months were comparable for both DCD and brain-death donations. The new technique involves reanimating DCD hearts on a machine before transplantation.
