New Study Challenges Hypoglycemia as a Causal Factor in Cardiovascular Events for Type 2 Diabetes Patients

The link between hypoglycemia and cardiovascular (CV) events in type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains uncertain. The study analyzed data from the CARMELINA and CAROLINA trials, both assessing the antihyperglycemic drug linagliptin. In the CARMELINA trial, hypoglycemia correlated with subsequent CV events, while the CAROLINA trial showed no such association. These bidirectional findings challenge the idea that hypoglycemia directly causes adverse CV events. Instead, they suggest that both hypoglycemia and CV events may identify T2D patients at high risk for both conditions.
