New Study Highlights Peritonitis Impact in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

A study examined peritonitis in 267 peritoneal dialysis patients, adhering to ISPD 2022 guidelines. The peritonitis rate was 0.25 episodes/patient-year, with an 84.2% probability of remaining peritonitis-free at one year. Medical cure and refractory rates were 70.3% and 22.4%, respectively, while 25.6% were culture-negative. Peritonitis-associated outcomes included death (6.8%), hemodialysis transfer (18.3%), catheter removal (18.7%), and hospitalization (64.4%). Relapsing, repeat, recurrent, and enteric peritonitis accounted for 7.8%, 6.8%, 4.1%, and 2.7%, respectively, while catheter-related peritonitis was 2.1%. Standardized reporting improves clinical practice and facilitates comparative studies.
