New Study Reveals Strong Links Between Obesity and Hypertension Mechanisms

A recent cross-sectional study involving 135 adults has shed light on the intricate relationship between obesity and hypertension. The study compared blood pressure and vasoactive mediators among individuals with varying BMIs: non-obese (BMI ≤ 27 kg/m²), obese (BMI 30-40 kg/m²), and morbidly obese (BMI > 40 kg/m²). The findings highlighted a clear association between obesity, particularly morbid obesity, and elevated systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP). Notably, subjects with morbid obesity exhibited higher levels of vasoconstrictors like Angiotensin II and Endothelin-1 (ET-1) but lower levels of vasodilators such as BNP and cGMP. The study emphasized that age, BMI, gender, and race were significant factors influencing SBP, with vasoactive mediators, including Angiotensin II, aldosterone, renin, and ET-1, accounting for 21.1% of SBP variability.
