New study suggests higher buprenorphine doses could help save lives - News-Medical.Net

A recent study revealed that individuals with opioid use disorder prescribed a lower dose of buprenorphine were 20% more likely to discontinue treatment than those on a higher dose as fentanyl became more widespread. Among patients starting buprenorphine treatment, 59% were prescribed the FDA-recommended 16 mg daily dose and 53% were given a higher 24 mg discontinued treatment within 180 days. Patients receiving the recommended dose were significantly more likely to discontinue treatment. These findings challenge existing dosing guidelines and highlight the potential benefits of higher buprenorphine doses in addressing the fentanyl crisis and improving treatment retention.
