NIV study finds new variant of chickenpox-causing virus in India

The National Institute of Virology (NIV) has detected the Clade 9 variant of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), responsible for chickenpox and shingles, for the first time in India. This discovery underscores the importance of genomic surveillance. Among 331 suspected VZV cases, 28 with vesicular rashes tested positive, revealing the presence of Clades 1, 5, and 9 in the country. While Clades 1 and 5 were previously identified, Clade 9 is a novel finding. Although its presence was confirmed, there was no significant increase in disease severity among patients.
