A retrospective cohort study, the risk of developing vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (VTDR), diabetic macular edema (DME), or proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) among 6093 GLP-1RA users was compared with 14,122 patients on other oral anti-diabetic agents. Progression to VTDR occurred in 10.1% of GLP-1RA users versus 9.5% of controls, while DME and PDR rates were also similar. After adjusting for diabetes severity, there was no significant difference in the hazard ratios for VTDR (HR = 1.02, p = 0.69), DME (HR = 1.06, p = 0.31), or PDR (HR = 0.81, p = 0.20) between the groups. The study concludes that GLP-1RA use does not increase the risk of diabetic retinopathy progression compared to other oral anti-hyperglycemic agents.
