This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the impact of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on adult bone health. Nineteen studies were included, involving over 21,000 participants. The analysis revealed that NAFLD was associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD) and increased risks of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures. The detrimental effect on BMD was more pronounced in men and in the femoral neck and total hip. However, there were no significant associations observed between NAFLD and BMD or fractures in non-Asian populations. The findings highlight the potential risk of bone complications in adults with NAFLD and suggest the influence of sex, bone sites, and ethnicity in this relationship.
