Normal and abnormal appearance of fetal ganglionic eminence on second‐trimester three‐dimensional ultrasound

Researchers conducted a study on fetal brain development using three-dimensional neurosonography. They examined ganglionic eminence (GE) appearance and size in normal fetuses, correlating GE changes (cavitation or enlargement) with cortical development malformation (MCD). The study included 160 normal fetuses (19-22 weeks gestation) and retrospectively analyzed 50 MCD cases. The GE was visible in 90% of cases. Intra- and interobserver agreement was high for longitudinal diameter (ICC 0.90) and substantial for transverse diameter (ICC 0.80). MCD cases exhibited GE enlargement (12 cases) and cavitation (4 cases). This systematic assessment using 3D neurosonography proves feasible for detecting GE abnormalities in MCD-affected fetuses.
