Normalized Mechanical Energy in Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Linked to Better Outcome Predictions

A recent retrospective study investigated the correlation between mechanical energy (MEBW), MP normalized to body weight (MPBW), and MP normalized to respiratory compliance (MPCRS) in pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (pARDS). The study analyzed data from 185 eligible children; results indicated a mortality rate of 43.7%, with non-survivors displaying higher severity of illness. The study found that MEBW, when normalized, was independently associated with mortality. Adjusting for malnutrition, only MP at 24 h was independently associated. MPCRS at 1–4 and 24 h correlated significantly with ventilator-free days. This suggests that normalized mechanical energy is a more reliable indicator of pARDS outcomes.
