
Researchers at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in the US have developed an antibody targeting the enzyme PTPRD, which is overabundant in some breast cancers. Described in the journal Genes & Development, the antibody draws pairs of PTPRD proteins together, preventing the enzyme's activity and leading to its destruction. In laboratory studies, breast cancer cells treated with the antibody became less invasive. The researchers believe this strategy could be used to block metastasis-promoting enzymes in breast cancer patients, particularly when combined with kinase-targeting drugs.
