In a study involving 720 parotid mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) patients, the study found that the number of positive lymph nodes (LNs) significantly impacts prognosis. Survival wasn't compromised until there were at least two positive LNs. Factors like intraparotid LN metastasis, LN size, and extranodal extension had no significant effect on prognosis once the number of positive LNs was considered. The proposed N stage, based on the number of metastatic LNs (0/1 vs. 2–4 vs. 5+), was a better predictor of overall survival (OS) than the AJCC N stage. This study highlights the importance of quantifying LN burden in MEC prognosis.
