Obesity Progression Linked to Brain Structural Changes

MRI scans of 258 overweight/obese and 74 normal-weight individuals revealed that gray matter volume loss starts in reward/motivation regions (caudate nucleus, orbitofrontal cortex) and extends to memory and inhibitory control areas (hippocampus, prefrontal cortex). The left caudate and medial orbitofrontal cortex act as key hubs. These findings highlight potential intervention targets for obesity treatment.
