Occupational exposures to silica dust and chemicals, particularly in industries like construction and mining, have been associated with an increased risk of systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs) such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic sclerosis. Silica-induced autoimmunity is believed to begin with macrophage ingestion of silica, leading to autoantibody production. The link between organic solvent exposure and SARDs is less well understood. These findings underscore the importance of improving workplace safety regulations and advancing the understanding of autoimmune disease mechanisms.
