Occupational Lung Disease: A Growing Health Crisis that Demands Action

Occupational lung diseases caused by workplace exposure are frequently misdiagnosed and underdiagnosed due to the lack of appropriate health surveillance programs for workers. These diseases account for more than 10% of all lung diseases, and chronic obstructive lung disease and asthma are the most significant occupational chronic respiratory diseases. Lung cancer is the most common occupational cancer associated with workplace carcinogens. Classic occupational interstitial lung diseases such as asbestosis, silicosis, and coal workers' pneumoconiosis still pose a substantial burden of disease. Workplace exposures to particulate matter, gases, fumes, and asthmagens are the most significant risks. Occupational respiratory infections have gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic. The diseases are preventable with appropriate exposure controls and workplace medical surveillance.
