One-field, two-field and five-field handheld retinal imaging compared with standard seven-field Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy

The study aimed to compare the agreement of different handheld retinal imaging protocols with standard Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) photography for assessing diabetic retinopathy (DR). The three protocols were one-field (1F), two-field (2F), and five-field (5F) imaging. The study found that the addition of peripheral fields in 5F imaging decreased the ungradable rate and increased sensitivity and specificity for referable DR. The results suggest the benefit of using additional peripheral fields in DR screening programs that use handheld retinal imaging. The study included 225 eyes of 116 patients with diabetes and evaluated images using three handheld retinal cameras.
