Opportunistic screening with CT: comparison of phantomless BMD calibration methods

A new study explores innovative methods for identifying individuals at risk of osteoporotic fractures through opportunistic screening using CT scans originally intended for other medical purposes. Traditionally, calibration phantoms are needed to convert CT values into bone mineral density (BMD) measurements. However, researchers have developed phantomless calibration methods. This study reviewed four such methods, comparing them to the gold standard of simultaneous calibration (ΔBMD). Results showed that precalibrated phantomless calibration methods performed well, while the technique without precalibration had lower accuracy. This research suggests the potential for improved osteoporosis risk assessment through CT scans.
