Optimal BMI Range Identified for Better Bone Health in Older Adults

Results from a study on 961 older adults revealed significant associations between body mass index (BMI) and bone mineral density (BMD). The study identified inflection points where BMI impacts BMD: 25.2 kg/m² for lumbar BMD and 27.3 kg/m² for femoral neck BMD. Increasing BMI correlated with higher BMD for individuals with a BMI below these thresholds. Conversely, higher BMI was associated with lower lumbar BMD above these thresholds, and the rate of increase in femoral neck BMD diminished. The findings highlight that while a higher BMI within a reasonable range benefits BMD, excessive BMI may adversely affect bone health.
