Optimisation of skin phototype classification

The Fitzpatrick skin phototype (FST) system, commonly used to assess skin cancer risk and treatment response, lacks representation for darker skin tones and relies on subjective assessment. A review highlights its limitations and suggests optimizing classification by separating pigmentation and photosensitivity assessment. FST, though established, isn't suitable for diverse skin tones and depends on recognizing erythema in richly pigmented skin. Objective methods for universal use are needed, involving digital technology for accessibility. Adjusting FST with inclusive modifications like language validation and a visual color spectrum could improve accuracy. The need for easily shareable, objective skin phototyping tools is emphasized.
