In the cross-sectional SOALS study (n=144), higher DNRA activity by oral bacteria was associated with lower HOMA-IR, fasting glucose, and 2-hour glucose levels. Lifestyle factors like smoking, toothbrushing, and physical activity influenced nitrate and nitrite metabolism. Results suggest that oral nitrate metabolism could serve as a modifiable, non-invasive marker for glucose regulation and diabetes prevention strategies.
