This retrospective study analyzed the complications and outcomes of patients who forgot to remove or exchange their biliary stents for over five years. The study included 40 patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and plastic biliary stent placements between 1990 and 2022. The most common stent was a 7 French double pigtail of 10 cm length. Complications included cholangitis, internal migration, pancreatitis, and portal hypertension. The most common outcome was stone removal, stent removal, stent reinsertion, broken stent, and surgery. The study concluded that prolonged biliary stent duration is uncommon and most commonly seen in patients with choledocholithiasis.
