Oxygen-Saturation Targets for Adults Receiving Mechanical Ventilation

Oxygen-Saturation Targets for Adults Receiving Mechanical Ventilation

The present study discusses a study conducted by Semler et al. that found no significant difference in outcomes for critically ill patients receiving mechanical ventilation with lower (90%), intermediate (94%), and higher (98%) oxygen saturation targets as measured by pulse oximetry (Spo2). However, the article also notes that Black patients may experience increased rates of occult hypoxemia, in which pulse oximetry falsely reassures adequate oxygen levels even when there is a low partial pressure of arterial oxygen.
