The present study examined the prevalence and impact of sport-related eye injuries in Sweden, with a particular focus on the racquet sport padel. Over a five-year period, 255 patients sought medical care for such injuries in Jönköping County. Floorball was the leading cause of eye injuries (39%), followed by padel (20%) and football (15%). However, the proportion of injuries caused by padel increased significantly over time, becoming the predominant cause in 2021. Padel-related injuries primarily affected older individuals and females. While most padel injuries were mild or moderate, a small percentage (4%) had severe consequences with potentially long-term complications. The study suggests the consideration of protective eyewear to mitigate the risk of eye injuries in padel.
