A national surveillance investigation in the USA identified 377 cases of paediatric acute hepatitis of unknown cause in immunocompetent children between Oct 1, 2021, and Sept 30, 2022. Despite 6% having underlying conditions, 92% were hospitalized, 6% received liver transplants, and 2% died. Adenovirus, particularly species F type 41, was detected in 42% of those tested. The study suggests a potential association between adenovirus and acute hepatitis in immunocompetent children, prompting further research to understand the underlying mechanisms.
