A recent systematic review has delved into the intriguing phenomenon of PANoptosis in periodontitis. The study findings revealed that periodontal pathogens can trigger pyroptosis, necroptosis, and apoptosis in various cell types. Notably, in vivo rodent models exhibited all three types of cell death, corroborating clinical studies that identified elevated vital proteins associated with these pathways in human periodontitis specimens and gingival crevicular fluid. This groundbreaking research suggests complex interactions among cell death pathways in periodontitis, potentially leading to PANoptosis.
