Parents’ belief in the importance of emotional talk positively influenced toddlers' emotion regulation. In a study involving 75 Dutch mothers and their toddlers (M-age 23 months), mothers with stronger beliefs in emotion talk used more emotion-related words. This was associated with better emotion regulation in their children. Despite the absence of a direct link between emotion regulation strategies and emotion talk, the findings suggest that time may be needed for emotion talk to shape children's emotional skills effectively.
